PLANT KINSHIP

Dear SONQO Community,

Have you ever stood beside a tree and felt something quiet pass between you? Not a thought. Not a story. Just a presence. A shared aliveness.

This is not poetry. This is not imagination. This is kinship.

We have learned to speak of nature as something separate. As a resource. As a backdrop. As something to be used, admired, or protected – but never truly related to. We speak of "connection to nature" as if it were an option, a preference, a lifestyle choice. But kinship is not optional. It is the fundamental truth of your existence.

Kinship Is Not a Metaphor

Plants are not symbols. They are beings. They breathe, grow, respond, communicate. They form networks underground, sharing nutrients and warnings. They recognize their kin. They adapt to their environment.

This is not anthropomorphism. This is biology. And it is also wisdom.

When you drink a cup of Cacao, you are not consuming a product. You are entering a relationship. With the tree that gave its fruit. With the forest that held the tree. With the families who carried the knowledge of how to prepare it. With the earth that held it all.

This is plant kinship. Practical, not vague. Grounded, not abstract.

What Kinship Asks of Us

Kinship is not a sentiment. It is a practice. It asks us to slow down. To listen. To remember that we are not separate from the living world – we are part of it. That the tree is not a backdrop for our lives. It is a relative. A teacher. A companion.

And when we remember this, everything changes. Not because the world changes, but because we do. We begin to relate to plants, to the earth, to each other – not as objects to be used, but as beings to be met.

This is the shift from metaphor to kinship. From talking about nature to being in relationship with it.

Your Invitation
